My husband's dad recently had a second heart attack and is back in the hospital once again. My husband and I both work at the same place and have the same position. We called in and stayed home from work today in order to visit his dad in the hospital. My husband has already told me he plans on staying home tomorrow, too. The doctors are planning an open-heart surgery for his dad ASAP. I am a hard worker and I have never missed work unless I was sick enough that I needed to see a doctor or there was some sort of emergency, like this one. I know this is an emergency situation, and my employer probably understands, but I can't help but feel like we're doing something wrong by not going to work. Are we?

I would save my sick days for when he actually has the heart surgery. In the mean time you can always visit before or after work.

It really depends on the employer and whether or not you fall under FMLA. If your employer is being flexible about this, take the day off, you are no good worrying while being at work.

When dad comes home, work with your employer to alternate days off with your husband to take care of your dad if needed.

Maybe you can offer to work a half day? In the end if you have any concerns, go to your HR department. They will fill you in on company policy and federal and state requirements. You may be able to get the time off due to a federal or state family leave clause.
