Yeah
I know how to turn the built in one off.. but bought one from the store and I want that to work.
So I don't want the built in one to work. Just the store bought one. How doI do that?

If you're talking about laptop, it will smart enough to detect the presence of external mic (or speaker) when plugged it.
it will automatically switch off the internal ones, and use the external.

you can't use the volume control to switch off the built in mic. because the volume control there controls the source TYPE (ie. mic), regardless of their location (ie. internal or external)

if your mic isn't working, make sure it is in the right hole (i've screwed that one up myself). turning off the built in one shouldn't affect it, unless you use the mic setting in volume settings which probably turns them all off.
