In first person you are writing as though you were there doing an action = "I ate supper."

In second person you are writing as though someone else you are talking to was there doing an action = "You ate supper."

In third person you are writing as though some one else was there doing an action = "He ate supper."

3rd person is when you refer to yourself by name as if you were another character or an outside observer. Did you ever see that Seinfeld episode with Jimmy? Jimmy talked about himself in the 3rd person. If Jimmy was talking to someone he'd say "Jimmy doesn't like to use the phone" "Jimmy hates phones". Since Jimmy is the one talking, the listener would expect him to say "I hate phones" not "Jimmy hates phones".

First person is when you are writing in a sort of narrative of your life. Think of it as a auto-biography. "I lived here. I shopped there." The key word is "I".

Second person is "you". You can't necessarily write a whole paper using second person. Second person is used mostly in person letters or e-mails. "How are you doing?" (First person is also used in combination with letters)

Third person is the most common form of writing. Third person is "He, she, it" in singular; in plural it is "they". "He went to the mall." "She works at Sears." And so on.

See the attached wikipedia articles for more in-depth information.

1st person is talking about yourself. For ex:
I went to the park. I ate an ice cream cone.

2nd person is when you are referring to the other person using words like "you".
For ex: You went to the park. You ate the ice cream cone.

3rd person is referring to the other person as well but using words like "he, she, their. etc"
For ex. He went to the park. He ate ice cream.

Hope that helps.
