Actually the next US Federal elections will be in the fall of next year. You could be having a local or special election in April. Generally with runoffs a second election is held at a later date and anyone who voted in the first election can vote in the second. A very few precincts in the US use instant runoff voting where you can mark a second choice on your ballot and the runoff occurs automatically if nobody gets over 50%.
