I have a question about the word "BABE"?

Me and my friend just got into an arguement about something.

He said its acceptable for a man to call a man babe.

As in,, on Sopranos, Tony might ask a guy, ?can you get this for me ,babe?
or on full house Jesse would say to Danny, "good job on that gig babe"

I told him its not used for men to say to another man the word "babe".. I said it is used for females. Like if a man asked a woman "Are you feeling ok, babe?. the only acception would be if a female called her significant other babe.

Who is right?

You are right. The only man that a guy should refer to as "Babe" is Babe Ruth, and in that case he should should actually use the term "the Babe."

I believe this is really a matter of opinion, although it is not standard for men to call eachother "babe". Generally, men would use the word "man" or "dude" when referring to another man in such a casual way. Women sometimes call eachother "babe", but most often the words "babe", "honey", "sweetie", or "love" are terms of endearment used by persons in a romantic relationship to refer to eachother. If the men in question have this type of relationship, I don't see the use of "babe" as out of the ordinary.

I personally would not want to hear a man call another man babe in common usage. If the man in question belongs to the Mafia, he can call another man whatever he wants to and no one will argue for fear of being shot. When Jesse used it on Full House he was doing an impresiion (I believe of Sammy Davis Jr.)(and it scares me that I remember that).

Short answer - you are right.

In my experience I have never heard a man call another man babe. I have only heard a girl say to a boy, vice versa..I also feel that it doesn't seem right for a man saying it to a man.. Probably because I don't feel that its a normal everyday thing that is said.

You are right, It is not acceptable for one man to call another man babe. Unless their like life partners or something. Yeah for a woman to call her man "Babe" is totally in the cards.

I think you are--"Babe" usually is used by men as a pet name for their female significant others, but I don't think it is inappropriate for a woman to call her male significant other "Babe." The only way it would be normally used in a man-to-man or a woman-to-woman situation would be in gay and lesbian couples.

I take your side for sure. No man had ever called me "babe" and if one did I might punch him in the mouth (not really but I would tell him not to call me that)

I am a female, and I call people babe. Guys, that is. If I were a dude, I would not be caught dead calling another dude "babe", because that's kinda gay. You dig?

I think the examples he provided about the Sopranos is very specific to a particular culture. Sopranos and Jesse are both supposed to be Italian. Probably not suitable outside that culture.
