Although the origins go back before recorded history, circumcision in the US really became popular in the 19th Century because anti-sex zealots like John Harvey Kellogg believed it would stop masturbation. Kellogg wrote, "A remedy for masturbation which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment. In females, the author has found the application of pure carbolic acid to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement. "
Well, boys (and girls) still had hormones, so they still masturbated. The next "sex is dirty" idea was that a natural penis in unhygienic. But once almost all houses in the US had running water, that stopped being reasonable, so the latest anti-sex approaches were things like "he'll be teased by the other boys if he"s not cut." Nonsense!
And now it has been found that circumcising African men who refuse condoms cuts the transmission of HIV, and the pro-mutilation crowd has jumped on that as a reason. But since condoms are used in most developed nations, HIV is spread largely through dirty needles and homosexual contact. Circumcision does not help prevent AIDS in those cases. Overcoming the cultural bias against condoms could cut the rate of transmission to near zero in Africa and thus would be much more effective than chopping.

Circumcision according to history began at the era of Abraham/Ibrahim prophet. He was instructed by Allah the only one God to circumcise his children by cutting his foreskin of his privy part.Abraham was the father of all prophets including Uzair,Moses,Jesus and Muhammad pbuh.So there should be a tradition of circumcision in the jewish, christianity and islam followers..But in fact among jewish and christianity followers the
ir male children are not always cicumcised. All muslim male boys certainly will be circumcised before they are grown up.Circumci
sion is a must in islam.By circumcising muslim man privy part is healthy because it is easily cleaned.Besides that his privy will have long stand in his love making, because his privy part is not so sensitive to brushing/rubbing..

Good question. I'm not sure, but you make me want to find out. I just know that for health and hygiene purposes, it's great. I knew a girl who's little boy was having problems, because he wasn't circumcised. His little peewie would, constantly, get infected. I have 3 older brothers, and I just found out, recently, that eventhough we're not Muslims or Jews, my mom had them circumcised. Smart mom!
My husband is a Muslim, and he says they waited a long time to do him and his brother. They were about 5 and 6 years old. He says it hurt like hell and it burned. I'm sure as hell glad I'm not a guy. hee hee hee

This mutilation was probably necessary when soap and water were not readily available. It certainly decreases the sensitivity of the glans. It may make self pleasuring less likely.

Some old man wondering around in the desert sun "heard G*d" tell him to cut his willy.
In an other desert an old man heard that girls should be cut.
Moral of the story: Don't listen to old men that have been out in the desert sun.

Hygiene, before sanitation and proper medical treatments were available, the flesh under the foreskin would have been the home to all sorts of infections. Its a moist, warm environment, and any sort of bacteria would grow rapidly in it.
