Energy with a color temperature of about 6200 K is received from the sun at the outside of the earth's atmosphere at an average rate of about 0.135 W/cm squared. About 75% of this energy reaches the earth's surface at sea level (Equator) on a clear day.

The average luminance of the zenith sun for a clear atmosphere is approximately 450 X 10 to the 6th ft-L when viewed from sealevel. The light that reaches the earth's surface from the sun consists of two components: direct sunlight and skylight. Light that comes directly from the sun is called sunlight; skylight is solar radiant energy scattered by the earth's atmosphere. The illuminance and spectral quality of sunlight that reaches the earth's surface are modified by the atmosphere through which the sunlight is transmitted. Ozone absoptions and scattering by gas molecules, water droplets, dust, smoke, salt, and other particles suspended in the atmosphere attenuate sunlight in the ultraviolet and visible region of the spectrum. Because the scattering effect depends on wavelength, both the illuminance and the color temperature of sunlight and daylight (sunlight plus daylight) decrease with increasing airmass or decreasing solar altitude and also depend on the abundance and size of water droplets and other particles in the air.

As in the case of sunlight, the illuminance of starlight is also a function of stellar altitude, decreasing with increasing airmass or decreasing stellar altitude.
