When I was growing up (I'm 51) all I had was a transistor AM Radio. I used to listen late at night. With just a night light on. A song that sounded very mysterious was "Nights In White Satin" by the Moody Blues. I think it was the mellotron. Another dj, on weekends, after 3am; would play "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles. "Good Morning" sounded especially cool around 6am. (he would time it so the album ended on his shift). "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones also sounded great. Years later I got an AM/FM radio for Christmas. The first music I heard was a half hour of Jimmi Hendrix,(without comercials!) This totally changed the way I looked at music. It was incredible! The next song to blow me away(again) was "A Saucerful Of Secrets", by Pink Floyd. And "Beatle Bones And Smokin' Stones" by Captain Beefheart also changed the way I looked at music (again). Any way, I'd love to hear what songs other people think, sounded especially good on the radio. Thanks.

I always thought radio made Van Halen sound good....better than any other playback method. The doors, Led Zeppelin, and Jimmi Hendrix is good too. I agree though, there does seem to be some music that is better suited on a little transistor radio then a huge fancy FM or digital means of listening. Good question.

i'm definitely your junior but i only appreciate music from your era (not trying to call you old!). i'd have loved to experience the music you got to experience when you were my age. music today is trash for the most part. every now and then a decent artist comes along but you had the Satisfaction, pun intended, of hearing new songs from artists i can download the whole libraries of in minutes. when i like an artist and they come out with something new its always so exciting. i'm sure it was infinitely more exciting when the artist actually had as much talent as the musicians of your teen years. but, on to your question, i absolutely love hearing The Hollies - Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, The Doors - Riders on the Storm, and anything Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits. something about how music plays on the radio beats out even headphones.

I'm close to your age (49) & I remember lots of "new wave" back in the 80's that was great on the radio in the car - stuff like Thomas Dolby, the Talking Heads (Love Shack), Blondie ("Call Me" rocked), "Turning Japanese" was great then too! And the Ramones - "I wanna be sedated"!
