what do you mean by "activities"?
I suppose a preference for dresses might be due to the fact that dresses are more distinctly (and exclusively) feminine, or in some cases that dresses could be more elaborate and draw more attention, then again, I dont think all crossdressers would mear only dresses, theres probably more variety in the wardrobes of most.
also, make sure you arent getting crossdressers and drag queens confused , as drag queens are generally much more flamboyantly dressed and have more elaborate dresses jewelry and clothes (there are of course other difference) but this isnt an area that I am particularly familliar with so, while this is the best I can say you may want to wait for someone who knows more than me to have the final word.

did? whats the past tense for, I LOVE cross dressing, its fun, its a change from the norm, its a gender f*ck. There are sorts of cross dressers, your casuals that do it once in a while when its convenient to those that get more into, do the whole shebang, get completely dolled up all of the time. It just something you either enjoy or don't really, its a fun experience and its freeing from the gender ideals set by society for man or woman.Where is it written a man can't have the same freedom of a cool breeze from wearing a skirt as a woman :P.
Not all cross dressers take up the act of doing all girly things, the mannerisms of a person can't really change that much from the clothing they wear, so how each cross dresser acts is according to their personality and how feminine they want to play up the role.

I am a guy who likes to dress up as a girl. Why? I don't know, it's just a part of who I am. I'm happiest when I'm dressed up as a cute girl. Yes, I do wear dresses, skirts, heels, makeup, girl's underwear... again, there really is no reason why, it's just a part of ourselves that we accept and embrace.

i can't speak for purest CDers. my reason was due to my sexual confusion and my ignorance of society. an inner part of me wanted to simply express an identity but being gay was forbidden in general and unconditionally abhorred by most. but if being a girl was my true desire (you can also use belief or thought) then dressing the part just made sense to me. that was ok as I was no longer 'just' gay.. i was a girl! unfortunately, by doing that i entered a different, also forbidden, arena. so no matter how one feels inside apparently what other ppl see is how or what you are expected to be.
