If you are only using it for low power devices such as flash drives, mice, digital cameras etc, don't use the power adapter because you don't need it. If you are using high powered devices such as USB powered scanners, external hard drives and things that use 500milliamps or more. If you do use the power adapter i suggest un plugging it from the wall, or at least turning it off because it will make the hub last longer, i only use my power adapter when it is needed. My hub will be 5 years old soon.

The hub has an external power adapter because the computer cannot deliver enough energy to power all the USB ports simultaneously, which is what the hub was designed for.

I don't think it would work if you detached the adapter, but you could try and see if it works.

Alternatively, put a bit of masking tape over the lights, or put the hub behind the computer tower so you can't see it.

it depends on what you have plugged into the hub, the hub should have come with a information leaflet, the more powerful items you have conected the more power its going to need so then you need to plug the external power source in, if its just for..an MP3 Player you can let it run of the computers power source, if you are that worried about the light put a little bit of blu tack over it or paper. hope this helps

If your hub has the option of being powered by the computer, there is no reason why you can't do it. If the other one melted the solder , it was probably cheap or faulty.

How about getting a sheet white blanket and cover the whole computer?

Just throwing some ideas but I really don't know why this is a problem for you.

Taping is another good way but that about it.
