it could be grubs.they chew the roots and can most definitley cause this..you can buy some stuff at lowes or wal-mart for this

it could also be birds eating the seed if you haven't put any straw down.

you may also want to get some herbacide it is the only thing that really kills crabgrass.

You are supposed to rough up the ground with a steel rake, and you are also supposed to use 2-3 times more seeds than the package states. That's what my Ortho Home Gardner book says.

Another way to fill in patches is to OVERSEED a lawn. You have to rent a split seeder from a rental place. It has steel spikes that makes holes in the ground for the seeds.

It's either lack of water or overwatering, too much shade, not enough nutriets, or disease from pests.

If you have a pet, are they urinating on the area?

Check to see you planted grass seed at the right time, it also needs to be covered with a top soil. If the seed gets dry during germination, it will die.

Any other questions please contact the Master Gardeners (for free) at your local cooperative extention of the Univ.

Good luck.

I would think that its due to poor sunlight or soil nutrients or any number of things including insects.
I would take a soil sample and get the soil analyzed. Also, I might add a product made specifically for grass promotion to the areas that are bald.
Make sure the weeds are DEAD, too.
