I am writing a debate for school and it is about this statement:

"The initial cause of WW1 was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary."

My stance is that it was a trigger but in order for my to write a debate I need peoples opinions that agree with this statement. Can you tell me why you agre thanks! Any websites would be appreciated too! Thanks!

The assassination of Ferdinand was NOT a cause of WW1 but actually a trigger. This is because the main causes were actually:

1. imperialism
2. nationalism
3. militarism
4. alliance system
5. naval race between Germany and the U.S.

There were tensions because of this but the assassination was not a cause at all!! Trust me!

After the assassination, Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia (supportin Serbia) then declare war on AH. Then Germany (allies with AH) declared war on Russia. Then France declared war on Germany. Then Germany invaded through Belgium (to get to France). Then Great Britian declared war on Germany (for going throught Belgium).

So all in all the assassination sparked this poweder keg in Europe to just have a domino affect of a war breaking out that could have just been avoided since it was merely between AH and Serbia. Considering that the war in general later was not fought in the anger and bitterment for the assassination of the Archduke, but the anger and bitterment for waging war against an ally of theirs. One of the reasons why the alliance system was a major cause.

I agree with the statement that the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand sparked the begining of WW 1 because when the Austrians blamed the Serbians for the death of the Archduke Serbia denied any involvment in it. But of course a serbian tarrorist cell was to blame which Serbia had no part of but Austria wouldn't hear a word of it. So inconclusion, because Austria woudn't believe Serbia had not part of the assassination Austria declared war on Serbia with it's allies Germany and the Ottomen Empire. Serbia eventually fell but the the triple allience (France, Italy, and Britian.) with the help of the U.S. defeated Austria and her allies.
