"O Pioneers" or "My Antonia" by Willa Cather are both good, and thought provoking. The biography of Jane Addams is great, but might be a bit overwhelming for an eighth grader. Also, anything written about or by Maya Angelou, or Oprah Winfrey. Both are truly inspiring women. I'm not sure whether your eighth grader is a boy or girl, but find out what interests him/her and go to the following website to read about women who shared the same interest. Most have either written their autobiographies, or have biographies written about them. Have fun!

that's exactly what I was going to say, The Diary of Anne Frank.

I read it in 8th grade, and I loved it. I also would suggest stuff about Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman or Abigail Adams.

Chinese Cinderella. Its an autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah, who was born into a chinese family. 2 weeks after she was born, her mother passed away, so her family considers her "bad luck". Also, her father remarries and her stepmother favoritizes her children from Adeline and her brothers and sisters.

This story is very touching, and i really encourage you to read it...

Lucy Gayheart, by Willa Cather. It's a great story, but easy for a younger student to read. I did my senior thesis on it in college last year. Enjoy!
