First off your tank must be large enough to accomidate your fish along with perfered water quality and filteration.
Second, you must not but fish that are incompatible with your tropicle fish. For example, if you have a Pirhana dont put it with a Red devil.
And third provide plants and other objects that normaly appear in the wild where the fish lives

Not sure about depressed but they can definitely get stressed.
What appears like depression may just be general ill health. Make sure your tank has as close as possible to perfect conditions to allow your fish to thrive.
Please visit www.wetwebmedia.com or similar resource to learn how to best provide and keep the best tank conditions for your fish. Hope this helps.

Your putting human emotions on fish. They can not get depressed. They get stressed by their environment, but the can't be upset about it, the don't have the ability to "feel".
