Shows such as Judge Judy features the former family court judge as an arbitrator hearing small claims cases with an award limit of US$5,000, the maximum in most U.S. states. The cases on Judge Judy are real, and Sheindlin operates according to the principles of the American legal system. There are no lawyers present and participants defend themselves, which is standard in a small claims court. The people who appear on her show sign a waiver agreeing that arbitration in her court is final and cannot be pursued elsewhere unless she dismisses the case without prejudice. The award for each judgment is paid by the producers of the show from a fund reserved for each case. The remainder of the fund is split between the parties for a particular case
In terms of Divorce Court, the rulings are legal and binding. Her decision includes finding in favor of one of the litigants (or, more often than not, declaring a joint decree); and resolving issues such as alimony and asset division. the judge's decisions are legally-binding. "Divorce Court" is essentially a form of arbitration.

I know that with Judge Marilyn Millian, the "losers" get a judgment against them and they have to pay the "winner". I know this because I contacted the show and asked. I too I was curious!

Like on the original "People's Court"(the Joseph A. Wapner version), the judgments are paid from a special fund created by the producers/creators...

As for "Divorce Court", it's a different game:the judgments are legal, binding and final(regardless of where the divorcing couple are from)...

HTH...

I heard the show pays. Why else would they go on tv to make fools of themselves?

It's different for all of them. Some of them pay for the whole thing while others might pay half of it.
