Say your dad hit you for stealing candy in the haloween bowl. or something like that when you where younger, 9-10 years later, you still think of it. How can you get over it when you try and it doesn't work? i know accepting things are hard in itself, but how?

It might help to try and understand why this particular memory is so painful for you. Was it significant somehow - perhaps you realized at that point your dad had the potential to really hurt you and it scared you, or perhaps you thought it was ok to take the candy and felt that your dad was being unfair, and that forced you to reassess the type of person your dad is. Just realizing why that event is so powerful for you emotionally might help you to put it into proper perspective.

Those memories will always be stuck in the back of your mind. I really don't think there is a way to ever get over something impacting like that. If there is a way then I haven't found it. The fact that the person that impacted me that way is somewhat improving and I am excepting that at least he's trying to change and what he did can't be changed and it's the past.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. Unpleasant memories seem to be the ones that stick in our minds the most. One can't choose which ones to forget.

Abuse is a terrible thing to go through.Memories can come and go just by an expression or action made.Try to move on with your life.Remember your dad was probably hit as well.Parents teach their children how to disipline
by what is taught to them.Learn to relax when those memories come back.Memories can't hurt you and neither
can Dad.

Choose a good memory, and whenever the bad memory surfaces, replace it with the good one. I still remember when my mother spanked me and spanked me and spanked me because when she was scolding me and said, "Do you understand me?" I told her, "No," because I didn't understand. Then she spanked me and asked again if I understood, and I said no again.....lots of times. It was very confusing for me. I think I finally lied and said yes to make her stop.
