i have to try out for a dance team on March 24th. we have to be able to do the splits (right and left), grand jetes (right and left), and a double piroette. the only thing i can do on that list is the pioroette! in my splits, i am EXETREMELY far away from the floor. approx. 10 in. (pleez don't make fun). i stretched for like an hour tonight. i am afraid that no matter how much i stretch, i won't be able to do the splits, therefore, not be able to make the team. i REALLY want to be on the dance team though! any thoughts? did any of you get ur splits in a month or less? is that even possible without hurting yourself? if u did, how long did you have to stretch every day?

kay, here's what you do. first, wash your face with cold water. get all those tears out. all you have to do is practice about 1/2 hour each night, you'll come around! your body is NOT going to magically become super flexible overnight. here's an excercise i do everynight with my class- it just takes 15 minutes and we are all doing fine! first, you HAVE TO WARM UP! otherwise, you will pull a hamstring or a quad and you won't even be able to go to the try outs. now all you do is stretch. do your quads- gently, though. them and your hamstrings are the most important elements in a good split besides balance. stretch just like you would in a dance class. if you havn't been to one in your lifetime, just try to reach each foot while sitting, etc. thats all you have to do! next, ease yourself into a split. do your weak leg first, so you won't get dissapointed by the other leg.each day when you do this, you will notice yourself getting deeper and lower. exactly what you wanted, right?

you do have to work for this if it is something you want, but if you really want to do this, you will def. try your hardest. good luck! i hope my advice helps- ♥Leah

If you keep working on it, you'll be very close by the time the try out comes up. Stretching is very important but try doing it in different ways so you are stretching all the muscles you need for the splits and grand jetes. If you get a video on gymnastics (you should be able to borrow one from your local library), it will show you specific ways to stretch that will help you learn to do both components.

use a combination of stretches to achieve your goal. split forward and hold it for some time then stretch to each side for suitable time, but use some of the stretches on this link:
http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/Webpages/Health/stretchbasic.html

also, please relax, you'll be fine. take some time to work on your other elements and ask the coach if you can have an extension on the splits. they can't expect you to just randomly know how to split. if you love dance and give it your best it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

stretch right before your audition and stretch for a good time, but you have to be relaxed and drink lots of liquid (not too much!!) that way when you go to do your split you'll already be warmed up and won't be trying to get stiff legs to go down and extend beyond normal. um...its probably possible if you stretch every night and do a routine. listen to some good music and maybe stretch in the morning and at night, but BE CAREFUL. r

if you sit down and leave one leg straight and then bend the other one so that the foot is touching the knee and lean forward until you're able to reach your foot, (one each side) that will help.

also. when you go down to do a split, only go as far as comfy and hold it, and then whichever leg is not straight, bend the knee and slide to the ground, letting the straight leg stretch and the bent knee keep bending as you lower to the ground. then hold it.

i'm so tired so i have to go, but i hope this helps!

Their just trying to keep people who can't dance from trying out. It's like a pre-try out eliminations only they don't cut people they just make people think they have no chance. I bet they don't even look for those things. At the dance team try outs at my school they told you that three years experience minimum were required to be considered as a member. But there were four girls who made it that had never danced in their life. (mind you that they sucked and they only made it because they were friends with other girls on the team) But the point is that you shouldn't worry. Just do the best you can and if they don't want an amazing dancer just because she can't to the splits then it's their loss.
But if you really want your splits then make sure you warm up before you stretch. Jog for few laps around you block just to make sure you don't pull anything. If you pull a mussel you'll never get your splits in time. Ease into it. Start with easy streatches and don't try to force anything that hurta. Once you stretch all the mussels in your leg gentlely then you do the same stretches but this time through make it really streach (but not to much that you hurt something) Then move on to more advanced stretches. One I recomend is to you lie on your back with your butt and legs up aggainst a wall. Spread your legs out as far as you canan try you get your toes as close to the floor as you can. Hold it for 45 seconds then open them wider and wider. Hold it for more time the wider your legs are apart. At the end of every practice try the splits (but don't force it you don't want to get hurt) Then take a few more laps around your block to get the blood moving freely. Then relax and drink water.
Good Luck with your try-outs and getting your splits!

I'd say to calm down and sleep tonight, and any time you have the opportunity, say at work/school, like on a bathroom break, do a few of your stretches and try to do the splits. Do this when you're breathing, not holding your breath, because oxygen helps muscles' performance.
