The Panama Canal. It's where the most men died in a non-military venture started by America, also a wonderful place because it made a trip around South America a whole lot shorter.

Pisa - where Galileo is said to have performed his experiements with gravity
Philadelphia - where the Declaration of Independence was signed
Poland - whose invasion by Germany started WWII
Pompeii - and its enduring reminder why it's a bad idea to built a city on the slopes of a volcano
