Why do you want collect or maintain sperm?!
Bank of Sperm use very low temperature "cryogenic" for freezing and banking sperm as like as liquid nitrogen (-196°C) where sperms can be kept many... many years. If you resort to simple home refrigeration (0°C) sperm cells can be preserved for some days only and then have to be utilized immediately putting them nearer ovule for surer fecundation. Anyway, it needs a safe & hygienic handling, some clear and close pipette where putting directly the sperm during the ejaculation could be good, for example.

either mode is fine because the quality of the sperm sample does not depend on the mode of extraction but on the gene and health of the donor, his sexual history, and the frequency of his ejaculation. if you are donating sperm, it is best not to ejaculate for a few days before the extraction. cheers!
