B.C. pills don't affect a woman's sleep cycle. What else is going on in your girlfriend's life? Stress (is she worried about something), sleep cycle (is she going to bed later), caffeine, has anything else changed in her life that could be affecting her sleep.
Have her keep a journal, is she eating differently or later?

I'd doubt it's directly related to the pill. Sleep disorders are pretty common and you can't rule anything out in terms of causation, but this is not a common effect of b.c.

As far as what is the cause, again, it could be a lot of stuff. Early-waking insomnia is very mysterious, and a lot harder to treat than the more typical difficult-to-sleep insomnia. It might be helpful for her to try going to bed earlier, or alternatively to stay up all night. Sometimes just breaking the cycle will allow you to sleep normally. She also should look into getting a blackout curtain... here in the northern hemisphere, the sun is rising earlier, and that might be affecting her. And if it becomes a serious problem, of course, she should see a doctor.
