ABC is reporting that the U.S. just got fresh leads in the hunt for Bin Laden and is rushing resources into Pakistan to join in the hunt. Should this have been reported? Aren't there some things that the media should voluntarily hold off on reporting, especially when it involves the potential capture of one of America's greatest enemies?

Also, just a side thought, but should this leak be investigated as thoroughly as the Plame leak? Why or why not?

Yes, that probably should have been kept quiet.

If ABC got the "leak", you can be pretty darn sure it was given to them knowingly, on purpose, with the express intent that they report it.

Government intentionally "leaks" stuff to the press all the time -- they do it when they want what they have to say reported but don't want to go on record saying it. And if the administration didn't want them to report it, they wouldn't have told them.

It was the same with the "Plame leak" -- it wasn't a "leak" at all, the information was given to reports with the express intention that they report it. The only problem there is that giving out *that* information violates federal law, so somebody had to pay for it (but not the ones that actually ordered the information put out...). It's not a violation of federal law to report on leads and troop movements, so there's nothing to investigate.

You really need to learn how the "real world" operates...

This is not anything Bin Laden didn't already know, we have been scouring the planet for him for 5 1/2 years....

Do you have some image of Bin Laden sitting out in a Pakistani cave, watching ABC on his satellite TV and suddenly jumping up and yelling to all his buddies, "They're on to us... pack up camp and move now!" ???

Trust me it doesn't work like that... this is not even in the same ballpark as the Plame leak, hell its not even the same sport!

I would be very surprise if they reported this without an OK from Bush or the Pentagon.

They hold back news when reporting it would do real harm (outing the ways the administration violates the Constitution, which another user alluded to is different).

I'm guessing they wanted it leaked.

Well, if I'm OBL and i get that report, I'm booking it out of there. And when a target is in motion, it's lots easier to spot. So if I'm the hunter, do i want the prey to hunker down, or do I want to flush it.

So the US is the hunter, OBL is the prey, and he's out in the open.

Sounds like the smartest thing anyone's done in a long time. Problem is, why has it taken 5 years to figure it out.

Now let's hope special forces are better shots than Cheney. Of course they are, much better.

The Republicans have no intention of capturing Osama Bin Laden that is why Cheney leaked the story to ABC. This how the Reich wingers operate.

ABC is always reporting some 'leak' or 'exclusive' or whatever. It is all a matter of whether to believe them or not. The same as with everyone and everything that makes the news.
Hard to determine what is true or not true with reference to news coverage anyway. Nearly every station reports the very same news anyway. All they do is put a different spin on things. It's all boring and rhetorial

Same with the New York Slimes. Even when our intelligence asked them not to expose methods of tracking terrorist that were planning us harm, they hate Bush so much that they don't consider the loss of a few Americans lives consequential as long as they can promote their extreme left wing bias. It should be investigated, but won't as long as we have the Congress we have. It will have to come from the F.B.I.

First, thanks for not forcing me to have to go to the link and sift through all the other stuff for the info! Second, I agree, if it's viable, it should not have been reported, but they may have gotten clearance from the Pentagon before going with it or it may be old info that they're reporting as new. If it's a leak, yes it most definitely should be as thoroughly investigated as Armitage, not Libby, talking about a glorified secretary at the CIA. Plame was NOT undercover!

I'm sure this "leak" was planted to make Bush look like he
was actually doing something, to help his sinking approval
rates. It won't work.

It's news and Bush has already stated that he won't violate Pakistan's sovereignty to go after terrorist there.
