Cricket history in short - "Bodyline bowling" was the name given to a strategy used by England to try to dismiss Australia's greatest batsman Donald Bradman during a test series in Australia. England used a ring of 4 or 5 leg-slip and short-leg fielders (behind the batsman on the leg-side) and our fastest bowler, Harold Larwood, bowled fast, short-pitched deliveries aiming at Bradman's ribs, hoping he would defend the high bouncing ball and get caught in the leg-side ring.
It was considered "unfair" and dangerous, since no-one before had deliberately bowled at batsmen, who aside from thin batting gloves, wore no adequate protection. The strategy worked but when Bradman and others were eventually hit, they were badly bruised. Fortunately no-one died but Bodyline caused a major political row between the two cricket governing bodies.
Cricket Laws were later changed to stop the leg-side ring of fielders being used (no more that 2 fielders can be behind square on the leg-side). With today's batsman wearing good protection and being bettter trained to play short-pitched bowling, any decent batsman would treat a bodyline ball as a "free hit for 6"

Body line Bowling can be simply defined as bowling the ball towards batsman body (ribs, head) from leg side.
The bowler bowls from round the wicket aiming the ribs and head of the batsmans body keeping 5 to 6 fielders on the leg side (mostly inside the ring....like forword short leg etc).

body line simply mean bowling to the body!! in 70s' they bowled to hurt the batsman specially Jeff Thompson and Lillie. it doesn't have to be only from leg side if your good bowler you should be able to bowl timely body line bouncer and rib bowl to the batsman.
