It's usually a skills test or an intelligence/common sense test of sorts.

If it's skills it will be to take computer and typing tests. If it's intelligence/common sense you won't be able to prepare.

They will take the people with the highest scores, or the people that meet their minimum standards and invite them for a first round of formal interviews.

This is a great way to make sure they are hiring people that can do the hands on skills part of the job. From the employers point of view they can equally assess all the candidates.
