What I would try doing first before even consider it is a possible virus is delete your cookie files and your offline content. This is usually the main reason a computer freezes up. The reason behind it is that your computer has to scan all those cookies all the time when you are on the internet and even if you are not if you are using DSL.
there are 2 ways to getting to the procedure to delete your cookies and offline content.
1 - open internet explorer and on the top of the page you will have File Edit View Favorites Tools Help
Click on Tools and then Internet Options at the bottom
2 - Click on your start button and then click on Control Panel
(some of you might have classic view and some don't) If you do not have the next screen in classic view you need to click on the Networking/Internet Options link
If you are in classic view click on the Internet Option icon
From here you click on the delete cookies and temporary internet files (click the box to delete offline content)
after doing this (time depends on when the last time you have done this procedure) restart computer and see if it still freezes up and runs slow.
You could also run a disk clean up and disk defrag (in system tools)
Also windows XP has a fail safe in it's programming. If you press the power button to turn it off. It automatically shuts everything down AUTOMATICALLY. Then puts your computer in hibernation mode (sleep) and sometimes powers right off.
This is perfectly fine you will not crash your computer doing this.
Also if this does not help your computer it is best you run a spyware program to check your computer.
To much spyware will slow your computer also.
Hopes this helps everyone.

First of all, your holding the power button to restart may eventually corrupt the O/S and cause you bigger problems. Try not to do it if you can help it. You can stop tasks running in the task manager.
Next, scan for virus' and such. You can do it free at www.antivirus.com if you aren't running an AV program. Once you get it working I highly recommend WinPatrol be installed. The free version helps you catch a lot of these sneaky programs being installed and launched on your computer and gives you back control over what gets put into stratup and what programs get access to memory.

It will surely increase the stability. 1st format the system drive alone, then install the some stable OS. Scan for a virus and / or spyware then do a defrag and chkdisk. If you still have problems then you may need some more RAM. Did the problems begin when you installed any new software?

Well join the crowd and welcome because I am
faced with this problem all of the time myself
and perhaps the only solution is to flush
our computers down the toilet
Or start getting rid of files and junk you no longer need on
your computer and what I have found that works for me
