The incused wordings(not printing) on the edge(the correct term) of the coin are the date, the mintmark(the place that made the coin, either a "P" for Philadelphia Mint or a "D" for Denver Mint), the mottos "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust". If you do not see any wordings at all on the edge, then you have an error dollar coin worth much more than $1.
