Hey if you can play and you have the money DEFIANTLY. I started out on a first act too. If you up grade to a Les Paul and a Crate or Marshal amp, your sound will blow even you away.

I started on a Yamaha kit guitar a few years ago(EG112C something or another - an HSS Strat copy) and recently upgraded to an Epiphone Les Paul Classic and am extremely satisfied. It has rekindled my interest in learning how to play. It sounds leaps and bounds better than my Yamaha. I played them through my little Fender Frontman 15G back to back and was amazed by the difference. My ears couldn't believe what they were hearing. Clean, distorted, overdriven - they all sound better on the LP. There are only a couple things I will tell you about my particular guitar: it's a heavy guitar, but for a big guy (6' 4", 240) like me it just feels like a really solid guitar once I put it on and the only problems I've had with mine are the neck humbucker volume pot on mine is a little wacky and the guitar is almost inaudible when set on Rhythm, but I'm going to call a Guitar Center tech about getting it fixed. Other than that it's a great guitar - not to mention the transparent black quilt top is amazing. I love it! I would suggest going for the Classic model or the Custom if the funds allow.

If you have your heart set on a Les Paul then go for it, but I definitely second the idea of going to a guitar store and trying on a few guitars before you decide. I'm really glad I did. I thought I was going to purchase a different guitar than I ended up with, but I'm so much happier I played different models and brands before I made my decision. It also makes the who experience of buying one much more personal (I ended up buying the one at Guitar Center instead of over the internet).

I would say you should upgrade to something. Good luck in your search!
