One of the biggest mistakes people make when beginning is drawing dark outlines. This will make people look like cartoons. Draw the outlines VERY lightly, and do most shape distinction with shading instead of lines.
If you're looking up things on the internet, look up the terms "core shadow" and "reflected light". These are extremely useful terms to keep in mind.

Make your outline very light & determine a light source ,which direction the light is coming from & shade on the opposite side .
Work from light to dark until you get the hang of it.
It is ALOT easier to make the shading darker than it is to lighten it. The more you practice the better you'll get.
If it's only for the grade, just show effort & some improvement & the teach should be satisfied.

Make the shadows very very dark with your pencil and then with your kneaded eraser gently start pulling off the heavy pencil. Lay the eraser in a flattened shape on the dark pencil press down and lift until you get the modeling you think looks right.
Work on grey charcoal paper and use white pastels for the hightlights and black pastels for the shadows, let the grey paper be your midtones.

I like the way Salvador Dali used angular curves to make a shadow or object move in two dimensional space.
The objects in his works had a surreal effect of space relation to other objects, that is one of the things that make him a master artist.
