In general, e-machines are sub-standard pieces of *mashitnery*. I still bought one because I am able to repair it or put enough tender loving care - to make it work.

Here are my tips: (do's and don'ts)
1. Do not set/configure it to hibernate
2. Run a regular scandisk and defrag
3. Protect it from dusts (accumulation)
4. Protect it from overheating - use a cooling fan
5. Clean the insides regularly

To clean the insides:
a. Shutdown properly and let it cool down for 30 minutes
b. Get a pressurized air canister
c. Open the CPU cover, and start carefully removing all parts and lay them on a white table cloth
d. Clean all parts using your pressurized air canister
e. Get a long pencil with eraser on one end... use this end to press all chips into place.
f. Use the eraser to rub off the accumulated dirt on all surfaces including copper connections between any card peripheral and the motherboard
g. Clean the keyboard thoroughly
h. Check the power supply by using a volt meter or tester
i. Check the fans if they're still functioning
j. Re-assemble all parts carefully, make sure all screws are tight and all chips/cards in proper place.
k. Close the CPU cover properly.

Hope this helps, cheers!

Emachines are sub PC's so it could mean almost anything. i.e. the hard drive is about to fail, or is almost full, other items like spyware eating your memory, or not enough. that is the starting point! Good luck
