Nigeria has been in a state of chaos since re-achieving their democracy in 1999. One can argue that they still aren't technically a true democracy as vote rigging and other means of coercion are practiced by all major parties in order to remain competitive. Years of military rule, corruption, and mismanagement have hobbled economic activity. Health, health care, and general living conditions in Nigeria are poor. The life expectancy is a low 47 and only half the population have access to clean water and proper sanitation. Nigeria is also plagued with sectarian violence. All of these may be seen as effects of Imperialism.

The Niger Delta is blessed with plenty of sweet crude petroleum, a much better grade than most other deposits. Therefore, the Imperialist powers- read:oil business- promptly made a sweet deal with a corrupt regime and are exploiting the natural resource leaving the majority of the indigenous tribes to their own devices. As a result, one of the three tribes is almost extict as the militias for Mobil, Shell, Total etc have killed them because they were protesting and fighting for fishing in their river which became polluted by the oil rigs. Same story, different locale. Heard it so many times before. Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, Brazil, Guatemala, Philippines ad infinitum.
