My daughter's car is making a clunking noise when she turns left and right and from the research we've done, it's pointing to the CV joint. Could it be something else?

THANK YOU! I didn't know it was dangerous! I'm telling her to not drive the car as I type this.

Yes, most likely and no, it's not safe to drive. The joint could fall apart and/or lock up maybe causing a wreck. The joints are on the drive axles. It could even damage the transmission. Be safe and get them replaced. Sometimes you can get them a bunch cheaper at a junk yard. (And sometimes not) Check the parts stores like Auto zone and NAPA stores. They sometimes can sell you new ones at fair prices. Shop around or call them. You can't always be sure about junk yard parts. (Auto zone has high quality parts if you want. You just have to tell them you want the best.)

Your research is right-on. Get the axle replaced ASAP. It's possible both will need to be replaced. Actually, it's best to just do both regardless. However, if you can't afford to do both it's ok to do just the one that has the bad CV joint. Whatever, get it done. It gets to be more unsafe every time it's driven. You can also compare having the CV joint rebuilt and simply swapping out for a rebuilt axleshaft. The rebuilt axleshaft will probably be more cost-effective. Good Luck!

if you can look on the end side of the front tire and see if you see a rip in the rubber boot you are probable right it is a CV joint it will run for so long then it will go out and if it happens at the right time it will tare up more than a CV joint so i would get it replaced as soon as possible. good luck

No from you are saying it does sound like the CV joint. To know for sure you need to grab the CV joint to see which one rattles. You can continue driving with it like that but it can completly fall apart at anytime as it continues to get worse.

Best recommendation is fix it as soon as possible. You don't need to be going done the highway doing 60 mph and have it let go.

You've got it correct. Generally speaking individual joints are not serviced these days. They sell "half shafts" which include the outer and inner rebuilt joints sealed boots and an axle. The job will be 100% like new.
