No and yes. The current Wii model is unable to play DVDs. In Japan there are rumors, that a new version of the Wii will sometime in the future be able to play DVDs also.

Probably something like the Panasonic GameQ from last generation, that was a DVD Player with Gamecube functions.

In North America, it's most likely going to be a no. Nintendo has said that there are no plans to make a DVD add-on for the Wii or make a Wii that can play DVDs. I think there are talks that Nintendo might make a Wii that can play DVDs for Japan and Europe.

If you have the latest issue of Gamepro, you can read more about it. Reggie Fils-Amie gave a little detail about Nintendo's play with the DVD player.

No. Nintendo seems to remember that the idea of gaming systems is so you can play games. They threw people a bone by adding the internet to the Wii, but that's it. Game systems are for gaming, not DVDs, not music, not videos. If you want those, buy a video iPod. I prefer using an actual DVD player as opposed to the one in my PS2. End of story.

probably not, Nintendo seems to think that gamers don't do hi-def stuff, which is why they only did 480p on the wii-- it's a far cry from the 1080p capabilities of the ps3, and the price of the system is the cost of that performance.
