A metaphor is a direct comparison between two things that are otherwise not literally related.

For example:
-Love is a thorny rose
-Love is a deep abyss
-Love is a poisoned arrow
-Love is tainted wine
etc.

Note that all of the above were portraying love as something negative, like you asked.

Ah, thy love is an ache
It pains me, the way you make
My heart break and then after a while,
I smile.

Love is thought of as a pleasant experience, note in the first sentence love is compared to an ache. That's metaphor. I wrote this spur of the moment to answer the request for four lines. Poetry does not have to be long to convey its' point. Sometimes love is an ache and pain is the feeling that accompanies an otherwise pleasant experience. When we get through the tough times of love, we smile.

a metaphor is a comparison without using the words like or as.
Eg: Your love shines brighter than the sun on a hot summer day.

a metaphor compares something to something else (doesnt use like or as, those are similes) often not literal. for ex., if there was a lot of traffic, you could say the espressway was a parking lot.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
