when the egg is fertilized by the mans' sperm.

If you are asking when do you know if it is going to be a boy or a girl? then you can find out as early as 10-12 weeks. That is how I found out what I was having (2x) by a test called CVS.

The female egg is an X chromosome. Sperm are either X or Y. When they join together, they form either an XX or an XY baby. An XX embryo is female. An XY embryo is male. Therefore sex is determined at fertilisation.

However, it takes a while for genitals to develop, so fetal sex is only diagnosable on ultrasound at around 18 weeks. Amniocentesis may detect sex earlier, but unless medically required it should be avoided since it carries a risk of miscarriage.

An unborn baby develops its "privates" at about the 3-4 month however at this time it is still to small to tell through ultrasound so most parents-to-be find out at about 5 or 6 months. it really depends on the angle your baby is in during the ultrasound and the size of the babys body in general.
