I hear people say that it's good for the brain, but is there any proof? Because I can't find any.

Like chess, sudoku requires the player to use logic to evaluate alternative moves. Doing this over and over reinforces logical thought processes in the brain, creating logical neural pathways...which can be used for any situation.

Not necessarily for the brain but working a sudoku distracts me for a short time from the normal problems of life. It gives me a few moments to myself that are precious.
