I would say it's almost definetely Smoke on the Water (by Deep Purple). For one thing it's a popular guitar riff that I've heard in a lot of places, and the description you gave is how most people would describe it.
Usually it's played very low in tone, if that helps at all.

I think it's "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf because I've heard it on several commercials, too. When I hear GREAT old classic rock and roll being used for commercials or if they even make elevator music out of them I foam at the mouth and chew the carpet cause it's such SACRILEGE!!!!
