That is usually the first signs of ich disease. Ich is a parasite that attaches to the fish as their host and infest their bodies. When the ich first attaches it actually does cause the fish to itch, and they will sort of do a "flash dance" to relieve the pain, but it doesn't go away unless ich is treated. If you look closely at the fish do they have salt like dots on their bodies. The salt like spots are the tell tale sign of ich and then you really need to get moving on the medication.
My pleco was pretty large when he was in a tank with ich, and I noticed a change in his character. He would swim quickly to the top of the tank and then back down. He couldn't itch himself on the rocks, but his body was definately irratated by the parasite.
If you visit aqua hobby, and look under articles they have plenty of useful information on ich. I wish you luck.

Sometimes I think they do just have an itch. Of course, that can also be a sign of various skin diseases or parasites so look at the fish very closely for signs of disease.

It's called flashing and it is a symptom of some sort of irritation. Check ammonia,pH,and look closely for signs of parasitic infestation.

I have one fish and he is attached to his pink plant. Fish like being able to hide, even if it's just a little bit. Even if we can still see them, they still like being able to sneak behind a plant or whatever decor you have.
