Your mom is just trying to help, but is I immagine a little older and is not up to date on all the modern advances. Things that used to be okay are not now that we have more technology and more reasearch, the same goes for things that were not okay and are now, because they have been altered. My third son suffered from allergy induced asthma terribly and was on albuterol from about 3 months on. My 5 year old took it when he had bronchitus (spelling?) If you are concerned don't ask us, being none of us are doctors, just to be safe seek a second opinion. Just make an appointment and tell them the situation, that you just wanted to make sure it was okay and needed. Also do some reasearch on your own, look up webmd.com, and use your search engine to search for it. Good luck.

Albuterol is frequently used for a 5 month old if they are having wheezing, coughing or other asthma type symptoms. It makes their heart rate go up and may make them shaky or jumpy. If you are using a nebulizer there is a new type of albuterol called Xopenex that causes less of these side effects. Many times babies at this age also have other allergic symptoms such as constant runny nose, watery eyes and sensitive skin.
If the doctor has prescribed albuterol due to RSV infection/bronchiolitis I would be a little skeptical since research several years ago was published that showed it did not help this kind of wheezing. It will not hurt your baby but won't really help her in most cases and may cause the side effects above.

Um. Your mom is wrong, wrong wrong! If your pediatrician has prescribed albuterol, it is because your infant CAN NOT BREATHE!!!! If your child cannot breathe (besides the obvious danger of DEATH), her lungs will scar and it could effect her for LIFE! PLEASE!! If you care about your daughter's health, HELP HER TO BREATHE! Is your mom a doctor?? A Pediatrician?? Or just another grandma who thinks she knows more than the doctors do? I don't mean to be ugly here, but how dare you waste any time in helping an infant to breathe! My God, it makes me sad thinking about it. While you are sitting here asking people if you should listen to your pediatrician, YOUR DAUGHTER IS STRUGGLING FOR EVERY BREATH!!!
I am asthmatic and I know what it is like to not be able to breathe. I can't imagine being too young to tell you I am suffering...
Take care of your child!

Yes, both of my children were on albuterol as young infants. They had to take it through a nebulizer machine. I work in a day care facility and there are several babies in there that also use it! If you are concerned then you should get a second opinion!

Yes, my son had asthma at the age of 3 months. We had to give him treatments three times a day with a Nebulizer. My son is fine and does not have asthma. Listen to the doctor. If it makes you feel safer, you are entitled to a second doctors opinion.

My daughter had breathing problems and was put in the hospital with RSV at 2 weeks and that was at a top of the line hospital. No if your dr thinks she needs it then she will be fine. My best friend's baby has CF and been on it since birth.

WHY did the doctor prescribe it. Does your mother have a degree in infant/pediatric cardio pulmonary medicine? There has to be a reason the doctor presecribed it...what was it?
