I just got a crown tail betta - my third. The others have all been fine but this one has been lethargic since I brought him home. He hasn't eaten or swam around. His water is fine. He was very active at the store which is why I picked him. Does it just take some longer to acclimate? The only difference between his tank and the others I have is that I got a larger silk plant that I thought he might like better than the smaller variety I usually buy. Should I take it out? I just don't know - I want him to be ok...

He just needs time to get used to things. That was the same with my fish, after a while he was fine. Just keep offering him food incase he takes it. Maybe the water is too cold for him?

Hi Jessica S.,

Give your Betta time to adjust. If your Betta will not eat the fish pellets try live or frozen blood worms. The silk pant may, or may not be an issue, try taking the plant out and see what happens. I also want to suggest getting a book on Betta's that really helped me a lot it covers most aspects including diseases and infections the fish can get in which case you would have to talk to the pet store to get advise on what antibiotic to get. Good Luck! I hope he starts perking up for you.

Sincerely,

Alice H.

Give him some time. Try some different types of foods and see if he likes those better. My betta hates flake food but loves bloodworms. He is probably still getting used to the tank. Sometimes when betta are in a tank without any reference points(gravel, rocks, etc.) they are confused about where to swim. Try decorating the tank a bit more and see if that helps.

Some fish settle right in while others can take up to a week to feel at home. Give him a little more time and I bet he'll be just fine.
