So I'm looking for a small-middle size city maybe like 50-70 thousand people that is really close to the beach but also has mountains for skiing or hiking. It would be cool if it was like an hour or two away from a large city so I could get that experience too. Is there anywhere In California that sounds somewhat like that? Thanks so much!

You want it all, don't you.

If you are loaded, then Santa Barbara is your place. If you are normal, like the rest of us ... you will have to settle for something a little more in line with reality. El Centro is about an hour and a half east of San Diego ... it has the deserts, the mountains (Anza Borrego park) and the beach is over in San Diego.

I'd really like to know what you end up doing.

i dont know that much about cali, but i live in spring valley (in the san diego metro plex area) and if you live on the outer parts it is not that bad and not a bad drive to the beach. it has alot more than 50-70 thousand. i am used to much smaller than even 50-70 thousand and i dont mind it to much. traffic sucks big time though during rush hour. otherwise it is pretty nice.
