In the words of the great Reggie Jackson
"It ain't bragging if you can back it up."
When Gilbert Arenas saying he was going to drop 50 points in a game and then scoring 9 was being cocky.
Rickey Henderson saying he was going to tear up the Giants in the 89 World Series and then hitting a home run to lead off the first game was backing it up.
So if you can't back it up, don't say it.

A lot of times cocky people appear to be better because they are noticed more than the "normal confident" player. I had that problem in my high school days. A good player (not as good as me) always got noticed more than me because I would just go out and do what had to be done. I didn't "showboat" or trash talk like the other guy so he got noticed because he would put on a show for everyone.

Eventually, the better player is always found by the right people. Scouts don't look for the attitude/perona, they look for the stats and actual talent. Case-in-point = I played 4 years of college ball and he got cut.

Simply put, the better player is better. Cocky or not, talent beats out personality every time.

Also, cocky people are more often than not cocky because they know they aren't the best player out there.

Well there's a fine line between cocky and confident. In sports you have to be confident in yourself or you won't stand a chance. Cocky is an extreme feeling of confidence (basically thinking you are the best and can't lose) If your too cocky u wont try hard and end up losing. The best players are somewhere in between confident and cocky. They have the skills at the sport and are motivated to win.

There's a fine line between ********* and confident. And as the saying goes, it ain't bragging if you can back it up.

The ONLY advantage to ********* is that sometimes it can take an opponent out of his game when he focuses more on you and your game instead of his own.

Confidence is better in my opinion. A confident player can inspire confidence in his teammates much better than a cocky player can. It is also shows better sportsmanship and a respect for your opponent.

Sports is a very emotional game, be it baseball, football, basketball and others. Cocky players aren't better than others, but their actions stand out more than others. To be better in the game, it takes confidence, which many of these cocky players possess. Above all, it's better to be a humble winner. In other words, don't do your opponents sack dance in the middle of the field after you've eliminated them.

It depends on the individual. Football comes to mind, T.O. is a cocky moron but he is pretty good while Harrison is a humble individual and is good as well. As far as the fan is concerned, I think humble is by far better. Act like you've been there before. That's why, often times, it is the younger, less mature players that are cocky.

A wise man once said, "It ain't braggin if you can do it." Its a lot easier to be cocky if you can back it up with results.

I was always accused of being that way but its not bragging if you can do it.I think it gives that person a psychological edge, and when you get any type of edge your ahead of the game
