I would much rather read the book. Usually, the movie does not do justice to the book. Sometimes I think they should write 'vaguely based on the book by'. However, I do appreciate the effort that goes into the making of a movie when there is so much to cover in the book. Of course, this doesn't absolve the movie makers from the obvious mess ups like casting characters that are obvious misses for the book character.

Watch the movie to see if the book is worth spending the time to read.
But many times the book is better than the movie, seldom the other way around.

Usually read the book, they leave too much out of the movie or change it completely.
