I always thought a 6 minute mile was a pretty good time for a normal, healthy male who is in reasonable shape.

Don't let these folks get you down...heck, you ran a mile! A lot of people can't even do that! Try to focus on your own personal goals and worry less about what other people think is good. Try running a mile every day and gradually work your way up to 3-5 miles a few days a week. As you continue running, your speed will naturally improve. They have lots of tips in Runner's World magazine for improving time, distance, etc. Running does not have to be competitive...just run and enjoy it!

Maybe if you are using crutches. Unfortunately, I do not think you were. An 8:36 mile is not good, but you can get better by running more often. I would recommend running a mile or more everyday for endurance, and repeatedly sprinting short distances for strength. You can easily do this by running in your neighborhood. I do not like running and I found that MP3 players make this task much more enjoyable.
In about two weeks, you will notice that you will not be as tired after you run a mile. If you wish, you can increase the distance you run to become more in shape.

No, definitely not. High School runners can run a mile in much less than 5 minutes. I used to run 2 miles in 9:30 so you do the math

Wow! Some of these people are rude! If you were able to last the whole mile, you are doing better than some. It all depends on your age, weight, and how in shape you are. Your time is good, but you can improve. Just be proud of yourself for participating in any type of exercise and keep yourself motivated to run a bit quicker next time.

Well, no, not really. At your age, I would want to be around six minutes or so --- six and-a-half at most.
