I am startled that your speakers worked plugged into your modem. modems are for network connection and not audio output. Nonetheless, I supposed you meant your front speaker port. If the speaker worked for a moment in the front port and stopped, I will test the speaker on another unit to ensure that the speaker is not faulty. It seems to me that you have faulty speakers and not faulty drivers. Seems to me that when speakers become hot or that the vibration hits the coils they short out.
Possible faulty speakers.

Well, unplug them, make sure your computer can use external speakers first. If the speakers were working, then they stopped, you can use MSN messenger, go to options, click audio wizzard, it will test your speakers and your mike.
