I would take Alex Rodriguez. No matter how poorly people think A-Rod did this past season, he still had a phenominal season. In a "bad" season for him, he hit 35 homeruns and had 121 RBI's along with 15 stolen bases and a .290 batting average. That is pretty good for someone who had a "bad" season. Look for him to do even better with Bobby Abreu in the lineup for a full season.

Answer depends on the following:

1) How many teams in league
2) Format: Roto, head to head, points
3) Scoring categories and if applicable point breakdown
4) Position requirements
5) Your strategy for the team
6) How you think players will do next year

On a 5 X 5 public yahoo default roto settings I'd take Soriano b/c I think he'll have a great year. He has more protection than in Washington and will also have more RBI chances. I wouldn't take Howard b/c there are a ton of other good 1B. I would consider taking Arod if you feel he'll have a career year on a possible walk year, but I dont. 3b is fairly deep but a definite drop off after first three and next two. Reyes is great, but there is still some past injury concerns and other good SSs. Santana is the best SP, no argument there, however you can get good SPs in the later rounds.

Generally speaking you will be thinking of Reyes, Soriano, Arod, Howard, Santana

Next level players one could consider are
Vladi, Wright, Cabrera, Ortiz, Beltran, Crawford, Utley

Depends on the format of the league, but I'd probably take Jose Reyes in any format.

Guaranteed 50+ steals, 100+ runs...

Put on some muscle in the offseason, so he will probably hit 20+ homeruns, maybe even 25-30.
Is getting more disciplined at the plate with age, so .300 is a good bet and also, more walks=more steals.
He's only going to get better.

Alfonso Soriano. The most underrated stat in fantasy baseball is steals. Soriano is the only guy in the league right now that is capable of a 40/40 season. He's a fantastic fantasy pick.

I will say Alfonso Soriano. The guy hit 46 HR's last year, along with 41 stolen bases. His power numbers are liable to be even better this year, playing in cozy Wrigley Field, where you can't forget about the occasional days when a stiff wind blows out.

The guy will hit for power, a decent average (.277 last year), steal bases, drive in runs (95 last year) and score runs (119 last year).

Unlike others who will help in one or two fantasy categories, Soriano is a plus all-around for the lucky guy that has him.

What do you mean "assuming Pujols is gone"? Pujols will be gone by the 1st drafter unless he is an idiot.

I suggest you go for Johan Santana. He is the best pitcher in the MLB. He's got wins, ERA, K's and everything else a pitcher needs. So pick Johan. Everyone is saying don't but do. He will certainly get you atleast 20 wins and will lead in ERA and K's this year. Plus, pitching is the most important aspect of a team.

I, personally, would take Carlos Beltran.

Soriano is batting leadoff so he won't get more than 80 rbi's
Reyes will probably have 20 homers and 70 rbi's
Santana is my favorite player but I can't justify taking a pitcher with the 2nd pick

Beltran should get around 110 runs, 40 homers, 125 rbi's, and 20 steals.

Depends on your strategy, I would consider Howard, Reyes, JohAN,or Soriano. Right now its a toss up between Howard and Reyes. I always go with the player I like more, and I like Howard more, he's great to watch and you get that guaranteed 50 homers, but there are plenty of good rreasons to take Reyes.

Ryan Howard. The reason is simple, HR's, RBI's, a batting average over.300 and lots of runs. The only down side is 0 SB's.

at #2 I'd go with Big Papi David Ortiz, he'll hit 40+ HR's again this year with like 135+ RBI's and be 2nd to Pujols in lots of categories, so I think he'd be best to take at #2, Ryan Howard could have a tremendous year, but sometimes players by there 2nd year have a sophmore slump, and I know this is his 3rd year in MLB, but really his 2nd year as a regular starter, so I'd pick Ortiz #2 if Pujols is picked #1
