The oldest book is supposed to be Etruscan

The Hindu Veddas may also qualify.

I thought of Gilgamesh because you specified a story.

The oldest authors technically did not write books, since the earliest writing was on walls and tablets.

However, the earliest known author of a text is the scribe Ani, who wrote a version of the Egyptian Book of the Dead somewhere around 1200 BC.

The Histories written by Herodotus is the oldest text I know of. Many believe that book laid the foundations for Homers The Iliad and the Odyssey. It isn't light reading, back in the old ancient Grecian times they expressed themselves differently.

The Tale of Genji I think is considered one of the first novels ever written, and HER name is Murasaki. Not sure about authors in general.
