That is a sign of the bettas about to breed, just hang in there and they will get around to it before long at all. Best of luck with them!

First of all, you shouldn't be keeping the male and female in the tank together unsupervised. You can never be sure that they won't start fighting. If you want them to breed, put the female in a glass jar (a jam jar would work well). Put the jar into the male's tank, and make sure the water levels are equal. Let them adjust to each other, and when the female is ready to breed, she should develop dark stripes along her body. Also, the male should have a good bubble nest made. After everything is ready, put them together AND WATCH THEM. The male should do a sort of "hug" over the female's body, and at this point she would release her eggs. They will drop to them bottom of the tank where the male will retrieve them and put them in the nest.

As for the "s" shape of your female...Maybe she is just stressed out. Give her a tank of her own for several weeks and let her recover. When both of them are well and at their prime, give it another try. Sometimes you just get a bad pairing, so maybe try it with a different betta.

The way your female is swimming and going to the nest is her way of saying "C'mere big guy! I'm ready!". Be patient - he'll get there.
