I just got my cartilage pierced for the first time and need to know how to prevent infections.

The guy at the piercing place didn't tell me anything about cleaning?
Also if you could tell me about healing times too that would be great.
Thanks in advance for the help to prevent my ear from turning green.

First off: never use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on a piercing, it dries the piercing out making it much harder to heal.

A cartilage piercing can take anywhere between 2-6 months to heal and can take up to a year sometimes.

To prevent infections take antibacterial soap or Provon and clean your ear with that 2+ times a day. If you can move to jewelry around and get some soap in the piercing do that but make sure to rinse it out good afterwords. Another thing you should do is sea salt soaks. Take 1 teaspoon of sea salt into a cup of warm water (as warm as you can stand without being too hot) and hold this up to your ear and let it soak for 5-10 min. Then rinse it out after. If you are consistent with this for the first 2 months at least and until healed you should not have to worry about an infection.
If it still does get infected you can go to the doctor and take the meds they subscribe but do NOT take the piercing out as it acts as a drain. Also do sea salt soaks 2+ times a day for at least 10 min at a time.
Any other questions feel free to email me!!

I had my nose & my clitoral hood pierced and used sea salt soaks, bought at Walmart by the salt & pepper. I mixed the salt with warm water and put it on a nail polish remover pad and soaked the piercing for 3-5 minutes twice a day and they both healed fast with little to no pain. Hope this helps!!
