A modem (from modulate and demodulate) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information.(1) A router is a computer networking device that buffers and forwards data packets across an internetwork toward their destinations, through a process known as routing.(2) If your laptop already has a phone jack then you already have a modem in it. As for the router portion of it, unless you are planning on sharing the network connection, it is not needed but yes there is software that can be installed to make your computer into a router made by various companies, some cost money while others are free. There is no modem software that I am aware of due to the nature of how a modem works, converts one signal type to a different signal type, thus you would need to have two different hardware connections to be able to do this, one for the original signal and one for the new signal.

Nope. The only things that can be downloaded are updates. Not the actual hardware needed.

A Modem changes digital information into electrical signals, then back again. No software can do that and Keep the necessary packets correct.

A Router is a specially made hardware that keeps track of many parts of the transmitions for the Internet Protocals. This includes keeping track of the NIC's ID.

Using a computer as a router is nothing new, in fact a router is a simple computer. There is software that will allow your computer to act as a router, also Windows XP Professional will act as a network router. There are also PC-Card Network Card Routers. I purchased one on-line for a surplus reseller. Think I only paid $10 for the wireless Card, that also worked as a router. Just remember that any computer to act as a router needs two Ethernet network adapters.

No, a modem and router are both hardware. When you have purchased a router, you can update the software in it by downloading the software from the manufacturer.
