Its very hard when you think of it.
Im talking about trilogies, quadrilogies etc that include sequals that are better than the first film/s.
Think Star Wars, Alien, Die Hard, Back to the Future!
THE ORIGINALS ARE ALWAYS THE BEST!

Most of the time the orgininals are better. But I have to agree that X-Men, Star Wars, Spiderman, The Lord of the Rings, MI:III, Ice Age, Shrek, Spy Kids, Toy Story and certain chick flicks like The Princess Diaries had some really good sequals that were at least as good, if not better, than the originals.
Pirates of the Carribean 2 is debatable. The CG was fantastic, but the storyline was trippy, squished, and not as good as the first one.
Sequals that are not as good would include The Matrix, MI:II, The old Batman series, Final Destination and others that no one knows about just cause they're so bad.

Sequels better than 1st : Aliens, T2, Blade 2, X-Men 2.
Stick with 1st : Lethal Weapon, Back To The Future, The Matrix.

Godfather II was just a little better.
Evil Dead 2 is better.
And I actually liked the Star Wars V better than IV.

Indiana Jones 3 was better than 1.
Pirates 2 was better than 1.
Lord of the Rings 2 and 3 were better than 1.

godfather part 2, supremley above the 1st with a much better cast
aliens was alot better than alien
terminator 2 was better than the 1st
as for star wars and lord of the rings every movie was outstanding.

I preferred Terminator two and the Return of the king in the lord of the rings trilogy.
