The guy who wrote Johnny B Good. He is from the 50s right? I might be off a decade or so but I pick him anyways. Besides, I wouldnt call the rest of the stuff exactly... rock.. which pretty much narrows down the choice to The king by default... which sucks :P (sorry elvis fans, no offense intended. Techno stuff is cool but besides that dont care for the guy)

chuck berry is great yes. but a lesser known guitarist from that era. Link Wray and his band the Rumble. he's damn amazing and has inspired so many great guitarists over the years, namely pete townshend of the who. check him out. i'm sure you local library has a copy of one his cds. buddy holly is also another one of my faves. but lick for lick, chuck berry is one the greatest of all time.
